Abstract:


In the United States, there are an estimated 12 million cases of STD each year with approximately two-thirds of the STD cases among individuals less than 25 years of age. This same population, individuals less than 25 years of age, account for one half of the newly diagnosed HIV cases according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Over 50% of the reported cases of HIV in 13- to 24-year-old females were from heterosexual transmission. These statistics exist despite aggressive educational efforts and programs by health care professionals. Research has revealed that behavior of sexually active patients does not reflect their respective knowledge level. Therefore, screening, teaching and intervention strategies may need to be reexamined in order to refocus the efforts of health care professionals.

On Aug 18, 2007 the board for this organization met formally and transitioned to the new slate of officers.
President–elect is Wendy Edwards (PresidentElect@MetroMilwaukeeNP.org)
Secretary is Barb Plumb (Secretary@MetroMilwaukeeNP.org)
Program chair is Sue Simon (ProgramChair@MetroMilwaukeeNP.org)
Margaret Meyer continues as Treasurer for another year (Treasurer@MetroMilwaukeeNP.org).
I, Arlene Kasten, have assumed responsibilities of President (President@MetroMilwaukeeNP.org).
I want to thank the out-going officers Nancy Whitehead (President) and Jenni Kainer (Program chair) for all their hard work this past year.

Pat Kingsbery has been a valued advisor for this past year as well. Thank you Pat.

There were some tough times this past year and this team came together to insure the integrity of this organization. I additionally want to thank those past officers who worked with us in an advisory to any extent this past year.

Minutes of the Aug 18 Board meeting will be available on the web site shortly.

I look forward to working with many of you.

One other thing: we have adequate monies in our account at this time, We will be able to again award a grant to Nurse Practitioner run clinics. Please contact me or look to the web site for the application. The number of grants and the amount of the grants will be dependent, so some degree, on the number of requests we receive.

Message from your Treasurer

MMNP now has over 430 members! Because of the numbers, the renewal
process has taken a considerable amount of time this year, but the
database has been updated and the directory should be available by
fall. A number of new applications were among the hundreds of
envelopes received, and did not get processed as quickly as they should have.

I apologize for the delay, but by now, all new members should have
received a welcome email. Please contact me with any questions.
